Gaming’s Greatest Companies: Naughty Dog

Home / Features / Gaming’s Greatest Companies: Naughty Dog

Although they haven’t produced bucket loads of original IPs in their lifetime, Naughty Dog has still become a staple brand within the game industry. The IPs they’ve created have offered gamers the very best in terms of creativity and graphics and you’ll be pushed to find someone who will disagree. With Crash Bandicoot, Jax and Daxter, and, of course, the Uncharted series under their belt, many would say Naughty Dog has got it made. In honor of the recent announcement of the Last of Us, we’re taking time out to focus on what makes Naughty Dog such an excellent developer and how the brand got started. Two men are responsible for the birth of Naughty Dog; Andy Gavin and Jason Rubin. Rubin grew up as a PC gamer and hacker and Gavin, a fan of games. As their bond grew, they began to experiment with Lisp and C++ in order to create software for the Apple II. Their first title was a skiing title called Skii Crazed and it was published by a company named Baudville. JAM Software (Jason and Andy’s Magic) would end up being the pair’s first name, with Naughty Dog coming much later down the line. With Baudville, they created titles like Dream Zone and Keef the Thief, but after awhile, they grew tired of being under the Baudville brand.Their first game outside of Baudville was a Sega Genesis title in 1991 named Rings of Power, which Electronic Arts agreed to publish. They had officially changed their name to Naughty Dog at that point, as it provided them with more originality amongst the other developers at the time. Unfortunately, Rings of Power didn’t do too well sales wise and Naughty Dog quickly became bankrupt as the Rubin and Gavin went off to college. It wouldn’t be until their partnership with Universal Studios that the company once again saw the light of day.Way of the Warrior was a title for the 3DO which launched Naughty Dog into the game dev spotlight and earned them a contract for 3 titles with Universal Interactive studios. They were approached by producer Mark Cerney (Sonic the Hedgehog 2) who encouraged Rubin and Gavin to look into making a 3D platformer, much like how Sonic was in 2D. It was from this that the game Crash Bandicoot was born. The production took nearly 14 months and in the beginning Crash wouldn’t have been the bandicoot we all knew and loved. Originally the team were working on names for other animals and it wasn’t until Gavin and Rubin sat down with an animal book that they found information on the bandicoot.Crash went on to serve 3 sequels and has sold over 6 million copies to date making it one of the highest selling titles on the PlayStation console. Its interesting design and high end graphics made it a complete hit. It was this title that brought on the attention of Sony Computer Entertainment; a partnership that would carry them through until now.Once Naughty Dog were focused on their new title and partnership with Sony, their partnership with Universal became redundant and so the companies parted ways. Enter Jak and Daxter. It’s now 2001 and Naughty Dog have solidified their position in the games industry; something that Insomniac Games had also achieved around the same time. Actually, while the two companies worked on their next titles (Rachet and Clank for Insomniac), they helped each other to find new mechanics. Many have wished these to would collaborate on a project, however, neither company has said anything of the like as of yet.Jak and Daxter was another successful series for Naughty Dog in the PlayStation 2 era, but sadly it would also be the last series that ND co-founder Jason Rubin would work on for the company. Rubin left the company some time in 2004 to work on the title Iron and the Maiden. What was next for Naughty Dog? Why a little series called Uncharted.Although Drake’s Fortune didn’t necessarily take off as well as the game’s sequels, it still was a major step forward in games as far as graphics were concerned. It also was one of the PlayStation 3′s first exclusive titles and to this day, still remains a fan favorite. The brilliance of the Uncharted series comes from how much care Naughty Dog has put into it. The developers stated that with each game they had hoped to try out something new. For example, in Among Thieves, the devs challenged themselves with designing snow. In Drake’s deception, the focus was shifted toward sand and fire. These escapades make many fans appreciative of the developers’ hard work. Furthermore, each game has done progressively better as the series has gone on. Where the first game managed to sell 3.5 million in 2 years, Uncharted 2 sold over 3 million in just a few months. After the success of the Uncharted sequel, the highly anticipated Uncharted 3 shipped over 3 million copies globally on launch day. One thing that’s awesome about Naughty Dog is the fact that they always manage to stay relevant to the times. Though they don’t have many IPs, the ones they do have are golden and remain in the hearts of gamers all over the world. Their newest title in the works, The Last of Us, will hopefully do just the same. It will also be one of the first times Naughty Dog has released a second IP on a specific console.

Redbox from Smiley360-Video Game Review

I signed up with Smiley360′s Redbox mission and got a code for a free rental.

What was suppose to be free…cost us 80cents…Which is still good for a one night rental but was a little sad it wasn’t free as said. I emailed Smiley360 and let them know… hope no one else had this problem! Using Redbox is easy to rent movies or games for 24hrs. All you do is use your credit card and type your email in at the end. Redbox has locations all throughout, making it convenient to return at any location. For our Redbox rental, we rented Sonic Generations on Xbox360. Playing this…It took me back to my childhood! My brother owned a Sega Genesis and we would take turns playing Sonic-back in the day :) So it was exciting getting to play the new, modern day Sonic. But we found that it runs sooo much faster then the one in the 90′s! It was almost too fast. Sonic would run and sometimes not stop fast enough, he would fly off the balcony or run into a bad guy. So that’s a bit to get use to. My husband liked the fact that you could change the language so he could have them speaking Japanese-which is the language he is learning. He says the stages are beautiful and the music is awesome-wishes there were more stages from the classic games. This game made a nice family night-our little man (age4) really enjoyed watching it as well. An over all good game and is one we will be buying :)

ALSO, Redbox is hosting 12 Days of Deals and Prizes and offering daily prizes from December 13 thru December 24. Text FUN to 727272 for instant savings of 25 cents – $1 off of your movie and game rentals, as well as a chance to be entered to win a daily prize from Redbox. Click Here For More Details

WWWIAF: Sega Genesis Vs. Super Nintendo » 2DayHangover

Yeah…it’s that time of the month again you brick-bashing, plasma-blasting, super-speeding, holy-shit-they’re-actually-bleeding video game crack fiends! It’s time for…

Who Would Win In A Fight?!?!

And for this month’s episode, we’re taking a trip back to the 16-bit world of video gaming for a match-up that has been decades in the making. A match-up between two ginormous grand gaming GIANTS. The two systems that redefined video-gaming. You know what the hell I’m sayin…don’t ya?

Sega Genesis Vs. Super Nintendo

That’s right, it’s about time these two consoles met to have a battle the likes of which the world has never seen. Two systems that were destined to eventually collide in a collision of chaotic catastrophe. They battled for fans. They battled for numbers. They battled for supreme reign over the world of imagination and virtual fantasy. That sounds naughty, doesn’t it? Get your minds out of the gutter!

You always wanna know, so I’m gonna tell you…

Nintendo came out after Atari, and completely vanquished all competition. Then, Sega Genesis and Super Nintendo arrived, taking gaming to a level that was unprecedented. Trust me, all us fuckers at the time were in AWE at the graphics being displayed by each system. The kids today with their Xbox’s and PS 3’s would probably think we were drunk as hell to be so amazed by such simplistic shit. And we probably were. Anyways, we were given new characters, like Sonic the Hedgehog and Mega Man X. A new look, a new experience, and a new battle had begun.

But, in the end, what was the better system?

And in this month’s segment, we also wanna know…

Who actually would WIN IN A FIGHT?

You’re damn right, we’re posing not one, but TWO questions this month for you sick video game addicts. Only fair right? Two systems, two questions! We wanna know, who do you think was the better system? Which system took gaming to heights the other one couldn’t? Which system, overall, had the better games, characters, graphics, and total experience?

We’re posing the INSANE question…which is:

If these two cartridge chomping consoles went at it in an all out BRAWL, no holds barred, ALL BETS ARE OFF Death-Match, which one would be victorious?

Here’s our two cents:

Sega is the upstart. Sega was dark, sleek, vicious, and willing to go to any length to get the job done. A devil disguised as a wholesome venue for family entertainment. Unless you were playing Castlevania: Bloodlines or Contra: Hard Corps, or DOOM. This system was a dirty bastard, and it wasn’t afraid to let you know it.

Super Nintendo was the adult version of Nintendo. An older, wiser, more sophisticated version of its predecessor. Super Nintendo wasn’t vicious, it was INTELLIGENT. It had a wisdom and knowledge that the Genesis had yet to acquire. A battle tested experience that could tell the tale in the end, should the battle ever occur.

Yeah, there it is kids, the insanity laid out for you like a trap laid out by Dr. Robotnik himself. Hey, you all know the boys at 2DH could sit here and vent for hours on this subject, but we’re more interested in YOUR two cents. So mash that vote button like it’s the turbo button in Street Fighter 2.

Which Was the Better ConsoleWhich System Would Win in an ACTAUL FightTil next time…

LET THERE BE ANOTHER BATTLE!

The best Cydia apps

  • 1 of 4
  • Next

Now that Apple’s A5-powered devices, the iPhone 4S and iPad 2, finally have an untethered jailbreak, there are hoards of iOS users jumping headfirst into the world of jailbreaking. When you’re used to being limited to the App Store, Cydia can present so many new possibilities that you may not know where to begin. We compiled a list of the best Cydia apps, some of the most useful — and fun — jailbreak hacks that you’ll find.

Of course you’ll first need to have jailbroken your device. You can follow our guides below if you haven’t yet done that:

How to Jailbreak the iPhone 4S

How to Jailbreak iPad 2

How to Jailbreak older devices

Now on to the best tweaks:

SBSettings

One of the best Cydia apps is easily the longstanding and iconic SBSettings. Changing settings on iOS normally requires you to open that big gray Settings app and dig through several menus. With SBSettings, though, you can turn WiFi or Bluetooth on/off, change your brightness, or switch to Airplane mode in a couple of seconds. Simply swipe across the status bar, tap the setting’s icon in the drop-down menu, and go on your merry way.

SBSettings has a ton of customization. It can be themed with a variety of looks, and you can download a multitude of extra settings icons from Cydia. These include entries for quickly activating personal hotspot (tethering), VPN, and many other tweaks that correspond to other Cydia apps.

Zephyr

One of the best Cydia apps to come along in quite some time, Zephyr adds multitasking gestures to the iPhone. Though using the home button isn’t exactly a chore, it will feel like it after you get used to Zephyr. It lets you close apps or bring up the multitasking switcher by simply swiping up from the bottom of the display.

Zephyr also lets you switch between your recent apps by swiping from the left or right edges of your screen. As useful as this is, there are situations where you’ll accidentally activate it. Fortunately, Zephyr gives you the option to disable the functionality for select apps. This comes in handy for avoiding switching apps when you’re turning a page in iBooks, and to avoid bringing up the switcher when flipping to the next feed in Flipboard.

Zephyr has such a native feel to it that we wouldn’t be shocked to see Apple “borrow” it for iOS 6.

iFile

Apple likes its users to avoid file systems like the plague. Heck, it even hid the entry for the Library folder in OS X Lion. Though most iOS users appreciate this simplicity, having the option to view and modify the file system can come in handy for advanced hacks and tweaks. iFile gives you just that.

iFile has been well-maintained by its developer, adding Dropbox integration, the ability to install apps natively, and play media from within the app. Of course iFile has always let you copy/paste files or folders, email files, change permissions, unzip compressed files (included .rar), and every other file management task you could ask for.

iFile costs $4 in Cydia, and is worth every penny to fans of iOS hacking.

Classic Gaming System Emulators

Yes, jailbreaking lets you turn your iOS device into a portable NES, Sega Genesis, or SNES system. You’ll want to track down a quality emulator for the system of your choice. For NES, you can check out a Cydia app called NES (no hardware controller support) or the similar NES4iPhone (hardware controller support). For Genesis, Genesis4iPhone is a good choice. Likewise, SNES4iPhone is a quality Super Nintendo emulator.

Of course the emulators themselves won’t get you anywhere. You’ll still need ROMs for the specific games that you play. Technically, you’re supposed to own a physical copy of the game for this to be legal (what kid didn’t own Super Mario Bros. 3 in 1989?), but use your own discretion. ROMs can be picked up from sites like DopeROMs, CoolROM, and EMU Paradise, as well as the usual file sharing sites.

All of the above emulators offer touchscreen controls, but most will also let you pair a Wiimote with your iOS device for a more traditional controller experience.

PdaNet or TetherMe

Carriers like forcing us to pay twice for our data. Why would a user on a capped plan pay extra for the privilege of sharing that data with another device? There’s only one good reason: there are only a few major wireless providers, so they can make up ridiculous rules like this to add to their bottom lines.

Fortunately, jailbroken iPhone users can take the matter into their own hands. Several apps in Cydia let you bypass your carrier’s tethering requirements and create a WiFi hotspot without a tethering plan.

We chose to highlight PdaNet and TetherMe because they have precautions in place to make detection less likely. They use APN editing to make the data look like it’s being used by your phone. There are other ways that your carrier could potentially find out, but we haven’t heard complaints about either of these apps.

The Escapist : News : SNK Playmore Plots Portable Neo Geo Resurrection

You just can’t keep a good console down.

First introduced in 1990, the Neo Geo was a marvel of gaming technology. It never sold as well as the Super Nintendo or Sega Genesis (likely owing to the console’s massive price tag), but what it lacked in mainstream adoption, the Neo Geo more than made up for in its wide swath of arcade-perfect ports. At the time, accurate translations of arcade titles were the holy grail of games publishing, and given that SNK’s home console housed hardware that was essentially identical to that found in the company’s arcade cabinets, those gamers who could afford a Neo Geo were treated to an unrivaled gaming experience.

Unfortunately, like I said, very few people ever owned one, and 2004 marked the final, official release for the console. Then, last night, completely out of the blue, a faint spark of life was spotted in the decaying corpse of SNK’s late-lamented gaming machine.

Japanese gaming site Famicom Plaza (via the translation and analytical skills of the good people at Andriasang) reports that SNK Playmore has officially endorsed a portable gaming machine dubbed the “Neo Geo Portable Device.” Verbatim:

According to the Famicom Plaza report, the device is 170x72x15mm and is a bit larger than an iPhone-like smartphone. It has a 2200mAh battery.

Controls on the device include four face buttons, a d-pad, four shoulder buttons, a menu button, a start button, and buttons for volume and brightness. Ports include headphones, AV and an SD.

That’s all handy information, but the truly interesting part is that this handheld seems more akin to a dedicated Neo Geo emulator than a new gaming machine. The original report claims that instead of swapping out cartridges or discs, games will be stored within the machine’s on-board hard drive space. What’s more, the NGPD will come with a wide selection of classic Neo Geo games pre-installed. To wit:

The device, currently going by the placeholder name of “Neo Geo Portable Device,” has 4.3 inch screen, two gigabytes of internal storage, and ships with 20 Neo Geo classics built in:

1.WORLD HEROES2.ULTIMETE 113.TOP PLAYER’S GOLF4.SENGOKU5.NAM-19756.MUTATION NATION7.LAST RESORT8.KING OF MONSTERS9.FRENZY10.CYBER LIP11.FATAL FURY SPECIAL12.ART OF FIGHTING13.SUPER SIDEKICKS14.LEAGUE BOWLING15.METAL SLUG16.MAGICAL LORD17.BASEBALL STARS PROFESSIONAL18.SAMURAI SHODOWN19.KING OF FIGHTERS ’9420.FATAL FURY

While we still have no official guarantee (or even speculation) that this device will be headed to America at some point, I find it very interesting that, according to Famicom Plaza, all of the aforementioned games appear in their North American, English-language incarnations. Even titles like Ultimete 11, which had little to no American presence, is already primed for release in the Land Of The Free, and the Home Of The Whopper.

So, assuming we do see this portable at Wal*Mart, how many of you will be rushing out to scoop one up?

Rom Games & Bios

Systems Available

Snes, Nes, Gameboy Advanced, Gameboy and Gameboy Color, Sega Genesis, Sega GameGear, PSX amd GBA Bios

This is all you need to get the most out of any emulator you have on your device!

Rom Games is a tool to find and download all your favorite roms and required psx and gba bios directly to your mobile device.

Features

  • Works with all emulators for your your device.
  • Thousands of roms available.
  • Fast download speeds.
  • Leave comments for each rom
  • Download as many games as you like.
  • Option to choose the directory to download your roms.

With Rom Games, you can view and add your own comments for each rom to see and let other users know how that rom works on your device. A good comment to make would be to tell what emulator you used and how well the rom ran.

The default directory to download roms is in a folder called ‘roms’ on your SD card. There are folders within the main directory titled according to the system of the roms. Example, if you loaded a snes emulator and wanted to find your snes roms, they would be under sdcard/roms/snes.

An internet connection is needed for this app to work.

Note that all bios will be downloded to ‘roms/bios’ and Gameboy and Gameboy Color roms will be downloaded to the same subdirectory of ‘Gb.’ Also, although you can download psx bios with this app, you will not find psx roms.

Before downloading any of the roms, please make sure you own the actual game for legal reasons.

Sony PS Vita, A Hacker’s Dream, Or Nightmare

The Sony PlayStation Portable (Sony PSP) was a dream for hackers, as they were able to pretty easily crack the first Sony handheld, getting to it run homebrew, as well as a variety of other applications. Will the Sony PS Vita end up being a hacker’s dream, or nightmare?

The Sony PSP was quickly hacked when it was released several years ago, as the handheld ended up being an absolute dream for gamers who enjoy truly unlocking their hardware.

We saw the Sony PSP turn into a device that was able to be manipulated via software to run homebrew applications, pirated software, as well as a variety of other things with great ease.

Sony set out with the Sony PS Vita to try and correct these issues that plagued its original handheld, by being far more pro-active in its attempts to fight hackers trying to crack the Sony PS Vita.

The jury is still out as to whether or not the PS Vita is going to be a dream or nightmare for hackers, but if it is unlocked, expect some pretty amazing stuff.

The Sony PS Vita is far advanced from where the Sony PSP was when it launched. It has a touch-screen, dual-analog sticks, as well as advanced processing power. Hackers would have a field day in what they would likely be able to run on the handheld if they were able to get into it.

There have already been attempts to crack the PS Vita, as the “Hello World” script has already been able to run on the handheld via the PSP emulation mode, as well as a Sega Genesis emulator as reported yesterday.

The seeds are being laid for a future that Sony should certainly fear.

Apple, Nintendo, Microsoft, and other electronics companies have all seen what has happened as their latest gadgets have all been hacked, including the Windows Mobile phones, the iPad 2, iPhone 4S, etc.

It appears that hacking the Sony PS Vita is only a matter of time, but the jury is still out on how easy or hard it may turn out to be.

Golden Axe – A true classic

Hello Everyone! This week lets keep the 8-bit ball rolling with a review of another 8-bit gem, Golden Axe. If you’ve even looked at a video game in the last 25 years or so then you’ve probably seen or maybe even played this game. And if you owned a Sega Master System or Sega Genesis as a kid then I can almost guarantee you either owned or played this game, and if you didn’t, shame on you. Golden Axe has long been a staple of the classic coin operated arcade and I think playing it is almost a rite of passage of sorts in the video game world. Golden Axe is a classic side scrolling medieval beat ‘em up similar in game play to Final Fight. In the arcade version of Golden Axe you can choose to play as one of three characters, Gilius Thunderhead, a dwarf whose primary weapon is a battle axe, Ax Battler, clever name, a Conan looking fellow whose primary weapon is a two handed broadsword, and finally Tyris Flare, a bikini clad sword wielding redhead. Each character has their own story line that has them seeking revenge against the evil dictator Death Adder. Death Adder has taken over the peaceful lands of Yuria and it’s up to you to take him out. You do this by killing hoards of Death Adders minions with swords, axes, and magic powers. Each character has their own unique magic attack that can be used to clear the screen when things start getting crazy. The magic powers vary from fire attacks to lightening attacks. Throughout the game you can collect small bottles of magic potion which are used to power up your magic abilities. Don’t get trigger happy with the magic though, each attack requires more or less magic potion to perform so tough it out with your primary weapons before lighting up the screen like the 4th of July.

Golden Axe Arcade Game Play

While the arcade version of this game is as epic as they come I want to focus on one of the home console versions instead, mainly the Sega Master System version. Oh yeah, the Sega Master System, everyone loves to talk about the Sega Genesis but I hardly ever hear people talk about the Master System. Even though it’s only an 8-bit system it’s fucking awesome! It feels weird saying an early Sega System is fucking awesome but it’s true. I love the Sega Master System and even though I never owned one as a kid I always drooled over it when I would get the chance to play it at a friends house. Sure, I’ll say it, I was an NES loyalist as a kid but whenever I played the SMS my eyes would widen and my jaw would drop because the games I loved in the arcade like Golden Axe and Altered Beast were available on the Master System and they looked pretty damn good for 8-bit games. After years of drooling I’ve finally added the Master System to my game collection but not just any Master System, the Master System Super Compact. “What’s the Master System Super Compact?” you ask. Well, unless you spent your childhood playing video games in Brazil, which is where this system was solely released, then you’ve probably never seen or played one of these things. The Super Compact is a wireless hand held Master System similar in design to the Sega Game Gear but without the screen. It has a D-pad and the classic Master System 1 and 2 buttons, the Sega versions of the A and B buttons, and a cartridge slot for games. It also has a large antenna sticking out of the top, this is where the wireless part comes in. You connect a small receiver box with an antenna to your TV’s coax cable connection to receive the hand held units audio and video output via RF signals. It’s a strange piece of gaming equipment but hey, no cables to trip over and you have freedom to sit back on the couch and get comfortable while gaming.

This is truly amazing, a portable Master System

The Super Compact was made by Tec-Toy, Sega’s distributor in Brazil. This system is the real deal and has the full backing of Sega unlike the system that shall not be named. For those of you that don’t know what I’m talking about I will say it just once, Media Megadrive. Since the Super Compact has to rely on RF signals to display games on your TV it’s susceptible to interference. Leaning too far one way or the other can cause the display to distort or get snowed out by TV static. Basically, it’s like tuning your TV with old bunny ear antennas so the game reception comes in better. While the system works pretty good I did have one problem with it while I was playing it and I’m not sure if this is a problem with system or if this is just a personal problem, the fillings in my teeth hurt while I played this thing. Now I’m not saying the Super Compact is to blame but the pain went away when I stopped playing it so those with braces or plates in their heads may want to steer clear of this thing.

Sega Master System Super Compact Demonstration video – I didn’t make this

So now that I have my Master System Super Compact perfectly tuned in it’s time to play some Golden Axe. The game play is pretty simple, kill any enemies using your sword or magic powers. Button mashing flies in this game so feel free to go nuts. If an enemy does manage to get in close your character will grab and throw them clear which looks pretty cool when you’re fighting off multiple enemies. Some enemies come at you riding beasts known as Cockatrices. You can knock off the enemy rider and hop on yourself. The Cockatrice has a tail swipe attack that you can use to kill enemies. Later in the game there’s dragons you can ride which of course have fire attacks. As for the magic attacks, this version of Golden Axe is a little different from the arcade version. Instead of being able to play as one of three characters in the game, the Master System version is played entirely as Ax Battler. Before the game starts you can choose from the three magic abilities unique to the individual characters in the arcade version. You can arm Ax Battler with either the Earth, fire, or thunder magic attack.

Golden Axe Sega Master System Game Play

The controls aren’t bad in this game. They’re responsive without any noticeable lag so the games action flows right along. As for the the graphics and sound, they’re pretty good for an 8-bit game. Let me say that again, pretty good for an 8-BIT GAME. The game does suffer from a little slow down from time to time and the character animations are choppy but none of that matters once you start playing the game. The combat is just good ole video game fun and blowing off one of your screen clearing magic attacks never gets old to look at. As for the music and game sounds, they’re what you would expect from an 8-bit game. That being said though, the music and game sounds for the Master System version of this game are WAY better than those on the Genesis version. Jesus, the Genesis even gets outdone by its 8-bit predecessor. Shit, why stop there? The fucking Game Gear outdoes the Genesis! Damn you Genesis! You would be nothing without Mega Turrican

Golden Axe Genesis Game Play

I feel the one thing that brings everything together in Golden Axe is simplicity. It’s as straight forward as it gets and it keeps all of the magic abilities and ranking up stuff, that I think kills a lot of fantasy games like this, from getting in the way. You want magic powers? You got three of ‘em, pick one. You want numerical character ranking and leveling up? You got it! When you die and you’re out of continues the game will rank you based on your performance with a letter and a number, that’s it. Oh, and the ranking doesn’t carry over to the next game so it’s basically pointless so the pressure of ranking up a character doesn’t exist in this game, it’s great. Now I know this game is from a different time so it’s not on the level that World of Warcraft or Skyrim are on but that’s a good thing. It’s nice to play a game like Golden Axe and not have to sink a significant part of my life into it just to complete it. Happy Gaming!

How To Choose A Video Game Console

There are six major video game consoles available at retailers right now; Xbox 360, PS3, PS2, PSP, Wii, and Nintendo DS. It can be hard to choose which one is right for you. And after you add in the old consoles too, it makes the choice even more overwhelming. Don’t worry too much though. Just ask yourself a few simple questions outlined below and you can easily decide which system is right for you. The points to consider are price, graphics, game selection, and other capabilities.

Probably the single biggest factor for someone choosing a video game console is the price they have to pay to purchase the system itself. Prices range from $599 for the Playstation 3 down to $129 for the Nintendo DS. And if you really want to save money you can buy past generation consoles like Playstation, Nintendo 64, and Super Nintendo and spend no more than $20 for a used system. The prices for games should also be factored in when making your choice. PS3 and Xbox 360 games are usually $59.99 new, while Nintendo DS games sell for $29.99 new. Games for old systems are hard to find at regular retailers, but they are usually quite a bit cheaper if you buy them online.

The graphics are always improving with the newer video game consoles, so the newer systems will always have the best graphics. The Xbox 360 and PS3 have the best graphics and can display in High Definition if you have a TV that can display it too. The Wii does not have the same graphical capabilities as the other two, though many casual gamers will not be disappointed. The Nintendo DS and PSP lack the graphical power that the home consoles have because they are portable. And the PSP can display graphics quite a bit better than the DS.

If you are considering older systems, each generation is roughly at the same level graphically no matter which system you choose. Playstation and Nintendo 64 are about the same, as are Super Nintendo and Sega Genesis. But the Nintendo 64 will have better graphics than Super Nintendo, which in turn is better than the original Nintendo.

The main reason you buy a system is for the games, so you have to be sure the games you want to play are on the system you choose. Some systems have very wide selections of games because they were so popular, like Playstation 2, Playstation, and Super Nintendo. With these systems you can almost always find a game in the genres you like. If you really like a particular series of games (Mario, Halo, Final Fantasy, etc) you need to be sure to pick the system that those games come out on. Mario games are only available on Nintendo consoles, including Gamecube, Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, and Super Nintendo. Halo is only on Microsoft’s systems, Xbox and Xbox 360. Meanwhile, Final Fantasy has changed systems. You can only find the newest Final Fantasy games on Playstation 2 and you can find older ones on SNES, Gameboy Advance, and Playstation.

Many systems have features unique to them that might be important to you or change game play dramatically. For example, the Wii uses motion-sensing controllers so all of their games use a different style of game play compared to the other systems with a regular joystick. Likewise, the Nintendo DS has one touch screen, another screen above that, and is portable too. If portability is important to you be sure to choose one of the portable systems PSP, Nintendo DS, Gameboy Advance, or Gameboy. If online games are and important feature, you should choose the Xbox or Xbox 360. They have the most capable online features.

After considering all these questions you can decide which features are the most critical for you and choose the system that best meets that criteria. If you are on a tight budget but want a wide selection of games to play, you should choose Playstation or Super Nintendo. The systems and games are very cheap now and thousands of games were made for them. If you want the best graphics and online games, you should probably choose the Xbox 360. It has some of the best graphics and the best online setup.

Once you have weighted all these options you should be well on your way to choosing the best system for you. Now go buy it and start enjoying your gaming purchase.
