Microsoft debuts Kinect for Windows, commercial SDK

The software giant launches a version of its motion-sensing game controller for Windows, hoping to spark development of PC applications that use natural user interfaces.

Consumers in the United States and 11 other countries can now buy Microsoft’s Kinect motion-sensing game controller for Windows hardware.

In addition to acquiring the new Kinect, users also get a software development kit that allows them to create commercial programs that use the Kinect motion-sensing and voice-recognition controls. Microsoft expects companies to develop PC applications that take advantage of the device’s natural user interface.

The suggested retail price of the Kinect for Windows is $249. Microsoft said that later this year it will offer special academic pricing of $149.

Already, companies including United Health Group, American Express, Mattel, Telefonica, and Toyota are creating computer programs that let users interact by using gestures or their voice. Microsoft hasn’t disclosed specifics about those programs. But the company notes that more than 300 companies in more than 25 countries are working on Kinect-ready apps.

Microsoft has sold 18 million Kinects since the device launched in November 2010. Virtually all of those sales have been to gamers using Kinect to interact with theirXbox gaming consoles.

But a handful of hackers quickly worked to tweak the software to allow them to use the device for their PCs. That led Microsoft last April to announce plans to develop a software development kit for the gadget. Two months later, the company released a non-commercial version of the SDK. The company announced plans for a commercial version in October.

And last month, at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas, Microsoft Chief Executive Steve Ballmer said that the gadget, along with the commericial SDK, would be available for Windows today.

Nintendo Wii – The Game Controller That Controls the Future

Of all the seventh generation gaming consoles that we have seen explode across the globe recently, the Nintendo Wii has probably made the most significant advancement in the form of its innovative controller system. This innovation has changed the way that gamers immerse within the virtual environment. Now gamers interact physically with the virtual world by manipulating it via digitally replicated actions of their own bodies. Resembling a TV remote control, this piece of technology has been imbued with chameleon like morphing capabilities. Though it looks like a TV remote it actually becomes a sword, tennis racket, golf club, bow and arrow (in conjunction with the secondary nunchuk controller) and even a light saber Depending on the game you are playing. As I said this controller system is probably the greatest advancement that has been made out of all the seventh generation consoles. And I will back up that statement by postulating this theory. The theory is that with gaming technology advancing exponentially as it is, it will soon reach a point of such perfection of graphics and game play that developers will have to look elsewhere to develop anything truly new or advanced. This new realm to which they will look, is virtual reality, total immersion of the gamer within the 3d environment. Think helmets, body suits and glove controllers. Indeed developments are well underway in this area already and I think in the future this will be the standard of home video gaming. Where by donning the suit will link you up to the game via motion sensors, a projector helmet and rumble and pressure devices which activate when you are sustaining damage or are engaged in a rocky activity within the game. The closest step to this out of the seventh gen’s is definitely the Wii. Although all three newly released consoles (the others being Sony’s Playstation 3 and Microsoft’s X box 360) have taken incredible leaps forward in graphics and online gaming departments, only the Wii has taken the step forward to physical interaction with the gaming environment beyond thumbing the joystick. An interesting side effect that has arisen out of the Wii’s physical interaction aspect is that it actually induces increased cardiovascular activity that constitutes physical exercise. Of course this depends on the game you are playing. Wii sports which comes as part of the package when you purchase a Wii actually includes a Wii fitness program which tests your abilities and fitness level and plots it against a chart of fitness age groups. Wii boxing can prove to be quite a work out On a more humorous side, the internet is covered with incidents and you tube videos of Wii remote mishaps Whereby unprepared or over enthusiastic users have caused damage to their TV screen, nearby windows, or gaming partners as they were so caught up in the action of the game Have fun with your Wii, but watch out for your living room

Help with T-Shirt Design?

So I have to design a t-shirt for Lymphoma Awareness, which is a type of cancer. Basically, it’s a green ribbon (green is the lymphoma color) and on the ribbon is a bunch of random stuff that spell out lymphoma. (i.e a sock for L, a video game controller for M…which I’ve done, because there are 2 m’s)

But I can’t think of any ideas for P, the other M, or A
Any suggestions???

Joey answers:

Well for M you could do books open on their side! / look like that < then just do 2 of em. // TADA!
I guess for P you could do like a watch that is curled up into a P shape? :S and for A… Maybe a spaceship? Or arrow head? I dunno… That's all I got!

Steven asks…

New Video Game Idea – Tell me what you think.?

I came up with this concept based on the success of guitar hero and rock band, only with a twist. This game would have sensors on your head, and a wireless controller that looks like a lighter. The player would be rated on banging his/her head to the beat of the music and holding up the lighter during ballads. I was also thinking of selling a bill acceptor that would mount onto the console so the player could buy a $30 t-shirt. Any suggestions welcome.

Joey answers:

I would definitely buy this game. It would be the ultimate gaming experience. These other guys are a bunch of idiots.

Your Questions About Video Games Controller Pictures

Richard asks…

Why are people so obsessed with video games?

Think about it, if they wasn’t a picture or sound on the tv, they would just be sitting there, holding a controller looking at a blank screen, why are video games so big, when they have little to offer

Joey answers:

Think about it if there was a blank screen?
What kind of stupid argument are you providing?
Of course they will be sitting there with just a controller and a blank screen just like anyone who watches TV with a blank screen.

Videogames are fun and a large majority are works of art.
They have become a favourite past time around the world and is now the most profitable industry in entertainment.

So little to offer? How about the experience.
Think about this. Early 30′s onwards (including war time), people used films as an escape from harsh realities and as such were popular.
Videogames are the next step in the evolution of entertainment. Who doesn’t want to imagine being in a fantasy world, or shooting terrorists, or exploring uncharted worlds?

Donald asks…

How do i get this controller to work on my computer?

It came with a portable DVD player so you could play games on it, and it has a USB port end, but nothing happens when i plug it into my laptop (windows XP professional) i wanna use it for games
heres a picture of it:

http://www.nassaulibrary.org/archives/MerrickTeenBlog/video%20game%20controller.jpg

its basically like that, but not a cartoon.
its a pretty generic brand, what else could i do?

Joey answers:

If it is indeed USB (it could be some proprietary protocol that happens to use a USB plug, as that was convenient tot he manufacturer), have Windows search, or search yourself, by looking up the chip in the controller, or the USB VID and PID.

Chris asks…

Graduation Ring of gaming. Is it stupid?

So I went to my HS and I was choosing my graduation ring…I didn’t know what to choose I mean I don’t play sports, play guitar, or not good at dancing. The only two things I love to do is Art and games. My brother graduated last year and he chosen art but I didn’t want to copy his so I chosen video gaming and its a picture of a controller, a computer mouse and a joystick.
So my question is….is this a good choice?

Joey answers:

Well…it’s the only choice you have if you want something different than your brother’s.

Steven asks…

can’t locate audio device???please help!?

I reinstall windows xp.then, everything’s fine but i can’t play any music.when play videos,no picture or audio.
so, i went to the control panel and open the sound and audio property. Next, I went to the hardware option from the sound and audio preperty. The weird thing is, i click the dvd/cd rom device property says location 1 (1) while all other device types which are sound, video and game controllers property location says unknown. I really don’t know what’s wrong.

Seriously,I’m just 14 and since i always use this notebook, everything that happens to the notebook will be on me.

Joey answers:

Windows XP or Vista does not have specific device drivers. After ANY fresh OS installation you should immediately install chipset drivers and the drivers of all other devices that are installed. The soundcard driver is just one of them. Otherwise, PC will not work properly. The drivers are usually in the drivers CD that comes with PC. If CD is gone, download drivers from PC or motherboard maker’s website.

How to Groove at Home With Video Game Mats

If you enjoy arcade dance games, video game mats can help you bring the excitement home The Nintendo Wii has already made home gaming popular. Now, dance mats and pads allow you to play popular dance games even with Xbox and PS3 consoles A dance pad is a simple video game controller that depends on your steps for input during a game. Most standard video game mats come in a 3X3 matrix, with certain areas highlighted for game control. These have a simple contact switch, which is activated when stepped upon. Most commercially designed dance mats can only be used with a specific console brand. When you are looking at your shopping options, make sure your console is supported. So if you get a mat for your Wii, chances are it won’t work on your friend’s Xbox One way to categorize video game mats is by physical strength. Basically, dance mats can be either “soft pads” or “hard pads”. The controls in both types are usually the same. The difference lies mainly in the material used, with thin plastic for the soft video game mats and harder material for the others. Recently, a new type of dance mats has become available, known as the “solid state pads”. These innovative game controllers used proximity sensors to detect your steps and movements. While these are expensive, they contain no moving parts and are sturdier than earlier designs of video game mats and dance pads. If you are a home gamer and will only be using video game mats once in a while, a soft pad is your best option. These are also the most inexpensive ones, costing less than 50 dollars. The light plastic material has stiff inserts, usually foam. This gives the soft pads some basic stability during gameplay. Another advantage is the variety of choices. Any major retailer usually stocks several brands, with individual units designed for the Xbox, Wii, PS3, and Nintendo consoles. Soft pads are also plug-and-play, making them easy to carry to another location. Hard video game mats are usually seen in arcades and similar social situations. These use metal, wood, and acrylics to create a very sturdy, durable platform. In fact, the whole dance gaming phenomenon took off thanks to the success of arcade dance games such as Dance Dance Revolution and Pump It Up. You may want to take a look at buying a hard pad if you are a heavy gamer or have an active social gaming lifestyle. The cost starts under $50 and can go up to $300 or more, depending on the brand and quality. You can even choose a double-pad for two player gaming for some real excitement If you have DIY skills, why not construct your own video game mats? You can shop around for the mechanical switches and contacts used in commercial dance pads. Once you have these, it’s just a matter of constructing a suitable platform using acrylic, wood, or similar materials. If you use the correct materials and design, you could soon be grooving it up on a dance pad of your own

OnLive Wireless Controller

OnLive is a service that lets you play games without downloading or installing them by streaming them over the Internet. When we reviewed the OnLive MicroConsole ($99, 3 stars), the service worked well enough over an Ethernet connection, but the issues with streaming game video and compressing the picture stood out on an HDTV. With the iOS (Free, 3 stars) and Android apps (Free, 3 stars), the wireless connections proved too unreliable to offer a smooth gaming experience. Where the others had shortcomings, the OnLive Wireless Controller succeeds. For $49.99 (direct), this controller lets you wirelessly play console games through the OnLive software on your computer, and it doubles as a Bluetooth gamepad for use with tablets. On a smaller screen, like a computer monitor, and with an Ethernet connection, OnLive becomes an enjoyable experience, and it’s a way to play console games even if you don’t have the room or budget for them.

DesignThe gamepad is identical to the controller that comes with the OnLive Microconsole, with a PlayStation 3-style button layout featuring two analog sticks, a direction pad, four face buttons, four shoulder buttons and start/select buttons. Below the main gaming area, five playback buttons handle recoding and playing back brag clips in the software. A microUSB port connects to the gamepad for wired game control, or for charging the included battery pack. A battery sleeve lets you use two AA batteries in place of the rechargeable battery pack.

Setting up the gamepad is simple. Just plug the wireless dongle into your computer’s USB port, wait for it to light up, then press the OnLive button on the gamepad. The gamepad will automatically sync with the receiver and the computer will register it as a controller. The gamepad also works as a Bluetooth device with tablets and computers without the dongle, though the USB receiver is a better option for computers because you don’t have to pair it as a Bluetooth device and it can support up to four gamepads at once with just the one port.

World's Largest Xbox Console Gaming Community Launches Professional Competition Service for Teams, League Play and Tournaments
Houston, TX (PRWEB) August 4, 2004 Team Compete, LLC today announced the launch of the Team Compete Professional LeagueTM (TCPL) designed exclusively for Microsoft...

The gamepad integrates seamlessly with the OnLive software, letting you navigate the menus with the direction pad or analog stick just as if you were browsing Xbox Live or the PlayStation Network. Once you enter a game, the on-screen prompts correspond with the gamepad, making learning games easy. Games are available for rental or purchase, with prices ranging from a few dollars for a few days of gameplay to $50 for unlimited use of new titles. OnLive also features the PlayPack Bundle, a $10 monthly subscription plan that offers unlimited access to over 100 games. For more about OnLive, see the MicroConsole review linked above.

Besides OnLive games, the gamepad works like any other interface device, so you can map the various buttons and configure other games to work with it. I set up Team Fortress 2, a PC game, to use the gamepad with little effort, though I wouldn’t recommend bringing a gamepad to a mouse-and-keyboard fight, like the online games of Team Fortress 2. OnLive doesn’t support the controller for non-OnLive games, though, and you can’t be certain if the controller will be fully compatible with your game of choice until you try to configure it.

GameplayThe OnLive software and gamepad work much better with a wired Internet connection than with the Wi-Fi connections used in the tablet software, and playing on a computer monitor makes the video artifacts easier to ignore than on a large HDTV with the OnLive MicroConsole. While the picture is still not quite up to local games due to the video compression used by OnLive, games look sharper and play much more smoothly on the PC software with the gamepad than on tablets or the MicroConsole. You’re not going to get close to a gaming PC running a new game locally with all the effects and resolution settings turned up to max, but you’ll get a decent gaming experience.

I played Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine and Assassin’s Creed: Revelations on OnLive with the controller, and both games felt as responsive as if I was playing their console versions. I hit timed events like chainsword combos and hookblade maneuvers without difficulty. With a wired connection and on a PC monitor, the lower video quality can be overlooked in the face of the satisfying gameplay.

Previous OnLive products have had significant flaws because of the nature of the service. The tablet versions of the OnLive software rely on wireless connections, which can’t consistently keep up with the speed requirements of the streaming system, and the MicroConsole, while more reliable with its Ethernet connection, still has video issues that stand out on the HDTV you’re likely to use with it. The OnLive Wireless Controller brings the same console gameplay to the PC, where an Ethernet connection and a smaller screen turn the imperfect OnLive service into an enjoyable, reliable way to play games without downloading or installing them. And it doubles as a wireless gaming controller with only a little effort for remapping, which adds to its value.

This US Army Video Game Controller Was Made To Get You To Enlist

The branded products include sniper and assault rifle controllers (with an ‘authentic US Army design’), backpacks and headsets for PlayStation 3, XBox 360, PC and Wii.

On the marketing side, it’s quite a savvy move. The frenzy surrounding Modern Warfare 3 is unprecedented. The game sold a whopping 6.5 million copies in its first 24 hours in the US and UK, racking up $400 million in sales and making it the biggest launch in entertainment history.

That’s something the Army just can’t match with its own games. Instead, piggybacking the craze by more involved in existing military games makes sense.

But that doesn’t do anything to quell the controversy, as the move is obviously another promo tool for the Army to get recruits.

Nintendo’s Wii – The Revolution in Gaming

Video gaming has undergone a complete makeover in recent years. The complex nature of some of the new games and consoles ensured that it is today an exclusive experience. But in the process, it has alienated earlier players who find the new controllers and games too complex. Hoping to reverse this trend, Nintendo now is creating “the most inviting, inclusive video game system to date”. The unique selling proposition of this game is that it will come with a unique controller that will be easy for anybody to use regardless of age or skill level. With this innovation, Nintendo has ensured that anybody can play games on the Nintendo Wii.

Nintendo’s President, revealed a prototype of the system’s game controller at

The 2005 Tokyo Game Show in September 2005 saw the Wii walk away with the Game Critics Awards for Best of Show and Best Hardware following the revelation of a prototype of the system’s game controller by the company’s president. Later, the 7th-generation video game console and the company’s fifth home console was released in the market in the latter half of 2006. With this console, Nintendo set new gaming standards with a new level of communication between player and console.

The secret behind this is the wireless controller system, which is a handheld pointing device designed to detect motion and rotation in three dimensions. The controller comes with a speaker and a rumbling device for sensory feedback. In a way, this new controller acts more like an extension of your body. With this innovation, Nintendo has taken gaming development possibilities to a new level.

Now, developers will no longer be restricted to a complex non ergonomic. It will also enable them to read new sets of player inputs including 3 dimensional body motions, speed of and relative positions of multiple players.

The popularity of Wii comes from the fact that it makes you feel as if you are in the game and not merely a player of the game. The player here makes the moves instead of merely pushing buttons. All the while, the console will monitor the actions of the player.

Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller (for PlayStation 3)

While it probably goes without saying, hardcore gamers spend hours at a time on their games. They obsess over strategies for each title. And they spend hundreds of dollars on their gaming gear. The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller is aimed at these gamers, and its $129.99 (list) price tag is justified thanks to its extensive customization options. This PlayStation 3 game controller lets you switch between multiple types of analog sticks, direction pads, controller configurations, and even faceplates, with even more planned. Mad Catz also makes a same-price Xbox 360 version, which is nearly identical because you can choose between PS3 and Xbox 360-style analog sticks and direction pads for either model. Its excellent feel and multiple options help this pricey gamepad earn our Editors’ Choice.

Customizing the GamepadStraight out of the box, the MLG Pro Circuit looks like your typical third-party PlayStation 3 gamepad with a detachable cable. However, once you pull the magnetically attached face plate off, its differences and appeal become apparent. The direction pad and analog sticks are modular, and you can swap out the default broken arrow direction pad and convex PlayStation 3-style sticks with the included solid plus direction pad and concave Xbox 360-style sticks. The left analog stick and direction pad can also be swapped back and forth, like Mad Catz’s Cyborg V.5 gamepad, letting you choose whether you want to play with a PlayStation 3-style layout or an Xbox 360-style layout.

The customization doesn’t end there. A cartridge on the back of the gamepad holds two 35-gram weights, giving you three weight adjustments for the controller. A flat cover replaces the cartridge if you don’t want any weights and want the back of the gamepad to be flat, instead of feeling like it has a battery pack. The faceplate and left and right handles of the controller are removable, letting you choose between the included glossy black and matte black plates included with the gamepad (or you can mix and match them). All of these different parts, plus the removable three-meter (9-foot-10-inch-) woven cable and the gamepad itself, fit in the included carrying case for easy transportation to tournaments or friends’ homes so you can switch your configuration on the fly. If that’s not enough, Mad Catz will offer additional “ProModule” analog sticks and direction pads of varying shapes and textures, faceplates of varying styles, and detachable cables of varying lengths.

PS3 DNS Error – Five Good Tips To Fix PlayStation 3 Network Errors
Isn't it great to challenge your friends on the network but equally frustrating when you cannot connect to the internet even after a million attempts?...

Despite the many removable parts, when everything is locked in the MLG Pro Circuit Controller feels rock-solid. The screw-on cable connection keeps the cable secured tight (there’s no wireless option), and the direction pad and analog sticks, despite fastening with a short twist into the sockets, stay in place. With the faceplate on, you can’t even tell the gamepad is modular.

How Gaming FeelsThe gamepad’s shape is closer to an Xbox 360 controller than a PlayStation 3 controller, and feels pleasantly solid in the hand even without the weights. The Xbox 360-like trigger buttons and larger, more curvy profile are much more comfortable than the PlayStation 3′s stock Sixaxis and DualShock 3 gamepads. In my large hands, the MLG Pro Circuit Controller simply feels better. Instead of being pawned off to the second player, this gamepad cries out to stay with the host.

One minor touch makes the MLG Pro Circuit Controller so much more appealing for gamers on the PS3. If you hold the Start and Select buttons for five seconds, the player lights on the bottom will invert (if you’re player one, the first light will be dark and the other three will light up) to signal that the trigger and bumper shoulder buttons have been switched. This means you can pull the right trigger button to fire weapons in most first-person shooters, when previously the right bumper was used to fire. It’s a small feature, but it makes playing shooters much more comfortable. The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller for Xbox 360 doesn’t include this feature.

I tried the MLG Pro Circuit Controller with three games: Mortal Kombat, Resistance: Fall of Man, and EDF: Insect Armageddon. As a fighter, Mortal Kombat benefitted from being able to switch both the position and style of the direction pad. I had the most luck with the PS3-style broken arrow direction pad in the PS3 configuration. In Resistance: Fall of Man, I used the shoulder button switching feature to use the trigger to fire, and I had the most comfortable experience with Xbox 360-style sticks in the PS3-style configuration. In EDF: Insect Armageddon, I had the best experience turning quickly to kill giant bugs with the PS3-style sticks in the Xbox 360-style configuration. Your tastes may vary depending on your play style and the size of your hands, but the different options mean you’ll play comfortably in exactly the way you want.

The Mad Catz MLG Pro Circuit Controller might be an expensive gamepad, but it’s also the best third-party gamepad you can buy thanks to its solid design and multiple configuration options. The simple ability to switch analog stick styles and positions makes it appealing, and the shoulder button switching feature makes it invaluable for gamers who like to play shooters on the PS3. If you can spend the $130 and you spend all your time on your PS3, this is the gamepad you want to get.
