Want a new Xbox 360 for $99? Pay for Xbox Live for two years

It turns out the rumors suggesting Microsoft would reduce the price of itsXbox 360 and change how it charges for its console were true.

The software giant today announced that customers can now buy the Xbox 360 4GB console with Kinect for $99. However, in order to get the $100 savings, they’ll need to sign up for a two-year Xbox Live Gold membership, costing $14.99 per month.

The Verge first reported last week on Microsoft’s plans to offer a special-price Xbox 360 bundle, saying that the deal would be available exclusively in Microsoft’s U.S. retail stores. According to Microsoft’s Web site, customers will be able to redeem the offer by bringing a code to a Microsoft Store, seeming to corroborate The Verge’s claims.

Still, the deal might be a tough pill to swallow for some customers. The same Xbox 360 4GB with Kinect bundle is available for $299.99 at GameStop. Assuming the buyer won’t play games online, that would actually be the cheaper option, since the 24-month Xbox Live deal will force customers to pay $360 over that period. For online gamers, though, it’s not a bad deal.

The important story here is that Microsoft is thinking outside the box. For years, companies have been selling consoles for a single price and leaving it at that. Microsoft is now looking to follow a quasi-carrier model by selling the device at a discount and making its cash on the backend with services. Whether Sony and Nintendo will follow suit remains to be seen.

CNET has contacted Microsoft for confirmation that the deal is only available in its retail stores. We will update this story when we have more information.

The SEGA Chronicles part IV: The end of an era

Following the failure of the SEGA Saturn, SEGA had one more chance to get it right. Its previous console war with Nintendo and Sony left the company in a financial ruin, mainly due to awful business decisions that alienated both consumers and retailers alike. SEGA would try its hand at the next generation with easily the most underrated console to ever be released: The SEGA Dreamcast.

The SEGA Dreamcast entered the Japanese market in November 1998 with a weak lineup that was fronted by Godzilla Generations. Ten months later the Dreamcast was released stateside, and sold well thanks to an incredible launch lineup featuring Soul Calibur, Power Stone, and Sonic Adventure. Yet you have to look at what this console did to understand why it was so amazing. It was the first console to include online gaming (via a built-in 56K modem), and it gave birth to 2K sports. The Dreamcast also had instant classics like Jet Set Radio, Phantasy Star Online, Crazy Taxi, Skies of Arcadia, and one of my favorite games, Shenmue.

Unfortunately for SEGA, Sony released its showstopper, the PS2, on October of 2000 and halted the Dreamcast’s momentum. To make matters worse, piracy killed game sales. In Japan, the console struggled; in the US, gamers greeted the Dreamcast with open arms. With almost 500,000 consoles sold in the first two weeks alone, SEGA thought it had a sure winner. But as fast as this new-found success came, it went. SEGA ran into an issues meeting orders of both its console and Virtual Memory Unit (VMU).

The shortage occurred because of the issues VideoLogic ran into when producing the consoles graphic chip, which stalled sales and left many gamers unhappy. Still, the Dreamcast performed well against and actually surpassed the Nintendo 64 and PlayStation in sales that year. In the end, none of it mattered. SEGA was in a deep financial whole and the Dreamcast cost them more money to manufacture than what they were making. Plus, dropping $70 million on Shenmue and Shenmue II sodomized the company.

Unfortunately for SEGA, Sony released its showstopper, the PS2, on October of 2000 and halted the Dreamcast’s momentum. To make matters worse, piracy killed game sales. SEGA made the decision to use GD-ROMs because of their large capacity, but SEGA overlooked a major flaw. The data could be easily burnt on standard CD-ROMs, they could then be played with the use of an easy to make boot disc, that mimicked the data needed to run a game on the console.

All of this led to SEGA discontinuing Dreamcast production in March of 20o1. The once proud and mammoth company withered away, and eleven years later is still suffering financially.

There are so many good games on this console that it would be almost impossible to pick only five games, so for this list I’ll choose my personal favorites.

Crazy TaxiThis is the perfect arcade port. Players pumped so many quarters into this game, when the annoucement  for the Dreamcast came life was merry. It was difficult to grasp why a game with minimal features was so amazing. Crazy Taxi had two stages to choose from, and only four different drivers who differed slightly. Yet burning rubber down the hills of sunny California was incredibly addictive. The insane driving kept the game interesting as players tried to each others high scores. The Offsprings catchy tune All I Want added to the adrenaline fueled cabby experience.

Phantasy Star OnlineThe first console MMO and it was a stellar pioneer for the console MMO’s to follow. Phantasy Star Online took the franchise in an unprecedented direction and it paid off. Players enjoyed an immersive world full of interesting locations that they could traverse with friends. Grinding was painless, although the plot was forgettable the game had enough content to keep gamers hooked for months at a time. SEGA did an amazing job in providing extra content in a timely matter keeping the game relevant for quite sometime. The recently announced Phantasy Star Online 2 looks to improve on everything its predecessor accomplished. Bravo to Hideaki Kobayashi and Fumie Kumatani for an amazing sound track.

SeamanSeaman which came packaged in with a microphone that plugs into the controllers VMU slot was quite peculiar. Your main objective was persistent interaction with a strange cross-bred man fish (What!?!). You could literally just sit and tell Seaman about your day. The AI was incredible at the time, Seaman responded with life-like and believable remarks, answering questions along the way and learning more about the player. It’s funny that in 1999 SEGA had done something that Lionshead Studio was trying to call ground breaking and innovative in 2009 (remember project Milo).

Jet Set RadioIf you haven’t experienced the cell-shaded, spray painting, graffiti action you have missed a hell of a game. Through out the game players roller blade around a fictional Tokyo, Tokyo-to actually. Players had to fend off rival gangs and avoid “five-0″ all in the name of self-expression. The stages were some of the most detail and intricate seen in gaming, players could use a variety of paths through each stage, all while performing tricks and grinding any rail in sight. For those of you that missed this when it was on the Dreamcast you’re in luck, an HD release will make its way to Xbox Live and PlayStation Network this summer.

ShenmueWhen I first picked up this title I knew nothing about it. A friend had played a piece of music from the game that caught my attention, yes I made a purchase decision based on music, and I’m glad I did. Before Grand Theft Auto III blew the sandbox genre out of the water Shenmue set the foundation. The plot followed Ryu Hazuki on his quest for vengeance after watching his father murdered by the hands of a mysterious lethal martial artist. Players roam the streets of Yokosuka Japan in search for clues regarding the murderer’s whereabout. This is one of the first times in gaming where you could explore an open world, at one point you’re even tasked with working a job. The game used Virtual Fighters fighting engine which led to an engrossing fighting experience.

SAY-GAH!Any respectable gamer knows that at one point SEGA had one of the most innovative consoles with the Dreamcast. The Dreamcast was ahead of its time, and took the risk that others didn’t even dare take like online gaming. It was home to some of the strangest and more experimental games like Cannon Spike, a rare Capcom beat-em-up/shoot-em-up that featured Darkstalkers, Street Fighter, Mega Man and other Capcom characters fighting their way past enemies while wearing roller blades.

Writing this piece has taken me on a personal journey and has rekindled my love for gaming. I’ve relieved my childhood and have re-played a lot of the games that define me as a gamer. SEGA will always have a place in my heart because it made games that mattered,it was the little guy that no one believed in. I’ve been around SEGA for as long as I can remember, from blowing on my carts during the infancy of my gaming life, to polishing my games on my Saturn, and playing Power Stone till wee hours of the night with my family. All I can say is thanks SEGA it’s been a great one. All we can do now is hope for the best, because when everything is clicking for SEGA it can produce some amazing and original games.

Drugs Used In Abdominal Pain

Abdominal pain, one of the most frequently occurring symptoms, may originate from any organ in the abdomen, like the stomach, intestine, appendix, gall-bladder, pancreas, and kidneys. It is due to any number of causes. Any patient of abdominal pain of recent onset requires early and thorough evaluation for an accurate diagnosis. However, the most common source of abdominal pain in the region of the stomach and intestines is the gastro-intestinal tract because it deals with outside material, that is, the food and drink we take. A little overeating may cause distension and indigestion. A spicy meal may lead to an increase in acid secretion and sour eructations. In these conditions some digestives or antacids are taken for relief. Very often flatulence, diarrhoea, dysentery, or an infection produce spasms of the walls of the intestines, causing a gripping type of pain called colic. This is a distressing situation and suitable measures for immediate relief are necessary.

Various household remedies like massage, hot water fomentation, churan, ajwain, jaljeera, pepper mint oil and sometimes even purgatives are tried, but their success is usually limited. Therefore, the patient takes one of the preparations (mentioned in the table given later) which provides immediate relief. What is so special about these preparations that they provide such dramatic relief? If you look at the table, you will find that all the preparations contain an antispasmodic (which prevents spasms of the smooth muscle of the intestine) which relieves colicky pain. However, if the pain is frequent or of a constant nature, the physician must be consulted. Under such circumstances the continued and prolonged use of these drugs, instead of improving the condition, may produce serious adverse effects.

These are atropine or its synthetic substitutes (anti-cholinergic drugs) and are used for relieving the spasm of the muscles of the intestine. The action of almost all anti-cholinergic drugs is more or less the same. There are only slight differences in their potency or duration of action. The adverse effects caused and precautions to be observed with anti-cholinergic drugs have been discussed in the chapter on Drugs Used in Peptic Ulcers.

Some drugs have a combination of pain reliever with antispasmodic drug. It is an example of shot-gun treatment and these combinations are not rational. At times peptic ulcer pain may resemble colicky pain (or an ulcer without symptoms) that may be aggravated by unnecessary use pain relieving drug combinations. You should feel free to ask the doctor to prescribe a safe drug.

Drotavarine (Drotin, trosa 40mg, 80 mg)

It relieves colicky pain of gall-bladder, kidney and urinary passage and dysmenorrhoea (painful menstruation). It relaxes smooth muscle directly and has no anticholinergic adverse effects.

Fenoverine (Spasmopril)

This drug regulates the irregular movements in spasmodic conditions. It is used in post meal domen distension and pain. It is given in a dose of 100 mg, twice a day. It is useful in irritable wel syndrome also.

It is likefenoverine but may cause constipation, dizziness and headache.

Talking eShop with Renegade Kid’s Jools Watsham – Interview – Nintendo World Report

Most die-hard 3DS fans are likely lamenting the barren wasteland of releases on the eShop right now. Plain and simple, it’s been a little slow lately. Maru’s Mission was the last Game Boy release on Virtual Console…11 weeks ago!

Not too long ago, North America was blessed with a fantastic string of eShop releases, including Renegade Kid’s Mutant Mudds. We sat down with Renegade Kid’s Jools Watsham and talked about the eShop and Renegade Kid’s past, present, and future.

Nintendo World Report (NWR): What were your expectations for the eShop last year?

Jools Watsham (JW): I had pretty big hopes for the eShop when it was released. I liked DSiWare, but my expectations were that the eShop would improve on that in a big way.

NWR: How have your expectations risen or fallen since then?

JW: My expectations were met and exceeded. I think Nintendo have done a good job with the eShop. It is easy and fun to navigate. They have made a tremendous number of improvements over the DSiWare and WiiWare shops, and even made some important improvements since the eShop launched.

NWR: What do you think is the eShop’s biggest strength right now? Biggest weakness?

JW: I think all that remains for the eShop is more awareness of it with the players. I think there are a lot of part-time players out there who own a 3DS and might not even realize that it has an eShop. We need to educate the players and the parents of young players about the eShop and the alternatives to $40 retail games it has to offer.

NWR: At E3 last year, you showed me four 3DS games (Mutant Mudds, Planet Crashers 3D, ATV Wild Ride 3D, and Face Racers). As we near the following E3, only two of them have come out. How would you compare the release of Mutant Mudds on the eShop to Face Racers at retail?

JW: I don’t know how many units Face Racers has sold, so I can’t compare the two games in that regard. Plus, both games are very different from each other, so comparing them at is kind of tricky. The retail market is honestly such a mess, I think it is very difficult for games to make an impact with players these days unless they have expensive advertising campaigns that push them in front of everyone’s face. That’s what I like about the eShop. It has a dedicated audience that can easily see what’s new on the eShop and check out screenshots, videos, ratings, and even free playable demos. This makes their buying choices a lot simpler, easier, and quicker than the clunky retail method of going to a store and guessing what might be good or bad on the limited shelf space.

NWR: Ignition is making the decision to publish Planet Crashers 3D on the eShop. How do you feel about the game’s chance on the eShop compared to retail?

JW: Yeah, I think releasing Planet Crashers as an eShop game is a wise and bold decision. Like I said earlier, asking $30 or $40 for an original game is very difficult these days if it doesn’t have the backing of a huge advertising campaign. Most companies can’t afford to go gangbusters with every game they release, so it ends up making every release very delicate and risky. I don’t know how much Planet Crashers will sell for, but I expect it will be a fraction of what the retail price would have been, which is awesome for the player!

NWR: You originally were pitching ATV Wild Ride 3D as a retail title. At what point did you decide to pull it back and self-publish it as an eShop game?

JW: Yeah, our original approach with ATV Wild Ride 3D was to work with a publishing partner to bring it to retail. I still think it could do very well at retail if it had good distribution. However, the market being what it is has made that a hard sell. I believe in the game. I think it’s a great game. I am extremely proud of it in terms of responsive and fun gameplay as well as the incredible visual upgrades we’ve poured into the game. I was not going to give up on this title. Having experienced some success with Mutant Mudds, the eShop quickly became the obvious choice for our arcade racer. It has not been easy to self-fund the development, but I am confident that in the end it will all be worth it.

NWR: What are the release plans for ATV Wild Ride 3D?

JW: We have another month or two of development before the game will be ready to submit to Nintendo for final approval. I hope the game will be released this summer sometime, for approximately $9.99 / 10 Euro.

NWR: Bomb Monkey uses the system on its side like a book. With the 3D screen, it seems like that doesn’t happen too often with the 3DS. What led to the decision to have the game like that, and was it difficult making the game work with the different-sized screens?

JW: Due to the vertical nature of the gameplay, rotating the 3DS to take advantage of “tall” screens felt like a natural fit. The two player mode uses both screens – with each player having their own screen – and the difference in screen sizes does not pose a problem at all.

NWR: Is there a left-handed option for Bomb Monkey?

JW: Well, the way the game is controlled isn’t strictly right or left-handed really. You can use the Circle Pad or +Control Pad to control your little Bomb Monkey, or even the stylus if that is more comfortable for you. It is your choice.

NWR: What are the release plans for Bomb Monkey?

JW: We hope to complete the development of Bomb Monkey in the next few weeks, so we should be submitting the game to Nintendo for final approval in about a month if everything goes to plan. It will be priced at approximately $4.99 / 5 Euro.

NWR: Do you have the freedom to set the price for eShop games yourself?

JW: Both the publisher and Nintendo are involved in determining the price of a game.

NWR: Do you have the ability to do dropped prices and/or sales?

JW: I don’t think sales are something that currently exist on the eShop. I am not convinced that sales which offer games for a much lower price for a short period of time are good for maintaining a sense of value in games generally. But, I can see the logic in selling games, which have been available for a long time, at a lower price to create new interest in a title. It is a slippery slope.

NWR: Going forward, how focused will Renegade Kid be on the eShop compared to retail? Are there any plans to work on other systems other than 3DS?

JW: The Nintendo eShop has proved itself to be a great market for us. Mutant Mudds was our test case, and it passed the test. Each game will have its own unique journey in the eShop market, so each game released is still a risk, but I am optimistic about the eShop and our games in that market. The eShop market offers complete independence to us, whereas retail does not. Retail releases require us to work with a publishing partner, which isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but I would like those partnerships to happen because both parties want to work together on something cool and not because that’s the only option to release a game. We have always been open to work on other platforms, and that is still the case. I think the Steam market is really interesting, so that is something we might investigate more in the future.

NWR: Do you believe there is a hope for a follow-up to Dementium or Moon? How about Son of the Dragon? Could any of those games have a future on the eShop?

JW: I think there is a small chance for follow-ups to Dementium and Moon. We at Renegade Kid would start development of either one or both in a heartbeat! But, this gets back to the issue of relying on publishing partners and retail, etc. One dream that I have is for us to develop a new FPS original IP and self-publish it on eShop. That way we retain complete control and can release as many sequels and spin-offs as we like without having to convince the bean-counters to fund it. Son of the Dragon could happen some day, sure, but that is a big-budget title so it may be a little while before we have enough cash to make that happen.

NWR: What kind of genres would you want to tackle that you haven’t yet?

JW: A 3D platformer would be fun. :)

NWR: Outside of Mutant Mudds, what’s your favorite eShop game?

JW: Haha, I see what you did there. Well, if it had to strictly be an eShop release then I’d choose Pushmo. But, if I could extend it to any game available through the eShop I’d go with Cave Story, Shantae, or Dark Void Zero. I guess I cheated a bit there, didn’t I? Sorry. There are just too many goodies on the eShop to limit it to once game!

NWR: How did you wind up with own recommendation section on the eShop?

JW: I know, right? Isn’t that crazy!? I think Nintendo are maybe fond of Mutant Mudds, and perhaps they’re slowly letting us slip under their wing a bit. It’s nice and warm under there, and I’ll stay for as long as I’m welcome.

NWR: How many StreetPasses did you get at PAX East?

JW: About 200, I think. It would have been more if I was able to clear out the 10 peeps limit quicker, but alas.
