Farm owner fined after overlooking legal requirements
Date: 18 May 2012 Release No: HSE-E-82
The owner of a Bedfordshire farm has been prosecuted for failing to complete legally required documentation in relation to safe working near overhead power cables. Bedford Magistrates’ Court heard yesterday (17 May) that on 23 June 2010 an employee of Davison & Co (Barford) Ltd, the owners of College Farm in Great Barford, was tipping compost from a lorry trailer into a field when the trailer came into contact with a live 33kV power line overhead. No-one was injured, but a subsequent investigation by the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) found the company had neglected to complete essential, legal documentation relating to the line. This is required to inform both employees and regulators of the existence of the hazard so that appropriate steps and controls can be put in place to keep workers safe. Davison & Co (Barford) Ltd, of College Farm, Great Barford admitted breaching Regulation 3(1) of the Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 in relation to the offence, and was fined £1,500 and ordered to pay £500 in costs. The company was found not guilty of breaching Regulation 4(3) of the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989 in connection to the tipper lorry incident. After the hearing, HSE Inspector Stephen Faulkner said: "It is an employer’s duty to complete all legally required documentation to ensure that necessary steps to protect workers from risk are communicated formally to all relevant parties, including the workers themselves."
Regional reporters should call the appropriate Regional News Network press office. Issued on behalf of the Health and Safety Executive by the Regional News Network

UnoJoy makes your Arduino play well with Xbox 360 or PS3 – Hack a Day
|
We’ve seen Arduino-based game controllers before, but the UnoJoy project wants to make it easy for you to plug them into a gaming console. The project is targeted at the Arduino UNO. Why only that hardware… isn’t Arduino universal? Well yes, but in this case the bootloader needs to be overwritten so that the Arduino will enumerate as an approved controller on your game system. Here the device is being put into DFU mode in preparation for flashing. Once that part’s done it’s time to get to work on your own hardware interface. The UnoJoy library provides all of the hooks you need to push controller data to the game console, it’s up to you to use the Arduino IDE to decide when these events happen. This would be a great opportunity to make the Pinball Stop controllers work with the Xbox Live Arcade games. Or take a look after the break to see [Alan Chatham] using the library to control Gran Turismo as if it were an NES Power Pad game.

A Brief History Of Computer Games
In the 1980s, most serious gamers could be found at the local arcade putting coins into arcade games such as Outrun, Street Fighter and R-Type. At the same time, the first home computer games began to appear, first the Sinclair ZX-81 and later the Sinclair Spectrum and Commodore C64. These computers loaded games from cassette tape but were cheap to buy, and many families could afford to have a games machine in the home for the first time. Games were controlled either via the computer keyboard, or by joysticks with one fire button which could be plugged in peripherally to the computer. The 1990s saw many home users move on to 16-bit home computers such as the Commodore Amiga and Atari ST. Priced slightly higher than the older 8-bit machines, yet still affordable for most families, the Amiga and ST had more memory than their predecessors and loaded games from 3.5 inch floppy disk drives. This meant that users could enjoy much faster loading times for their games, as well as significantly faster games with better graphics and sound. At around the same time, the first home games consoles began to appear, with the Sega Master System and Nintendo 64 being the most popular. These were then superseded by 16-bit consoles, the Sega Megadrive and Super Nintendo or SNES. The console games were stored on cartridge meaning they loaded almost instantly, however the games themselves were more expensive than comparable games for the Amiga and ST. In the late 1990s, the 16-bit home computers began to die out as more and more people were able to own a home PC, which they could also use for games. At the same time, consoles also took another step forward with the first Sony PlayStations being released, offering enhanced graphics and levels of game play that had never been seen previously. As PC ownership became more widespread, the console manufacturers faced an ongoing challenge to make their machines popular. They have responded by producing ever more advanced consoles. The Nintendo Wii is one example, which introduced a new concept of wireless controllers which respond to human movement. At the same time, the internet began to play a major part in everyday life and gaming has embraced this as you might expect. Now, players with consoles or PCs can join in distributed multi-player games with either their own friends, or with perfect strangers located anywhere across the world. It is no longer necessary to even own a physical copy of the game being played, as was the case in the old days. Games can now be played entirely online, in some cases free of charge. Gaming has certainly come a long way since the days of the ZX Spectrum, and one can only begin to speculate what changes will have occurred in another 30 years

Samsung I9000 Galaxy S Unlocked GSM Smartphone – 5 MP Camera, Wi-Fi, Android
The Samsung I9000 S Unlocked GSM Smartphone illustrates why this consumer electronics firm has become the force it is today. First, it is a dual-band phone that operates both GSM and EDGE/GPRS. It operates in HSDPA mode in the 900, 1900 and 2100 MHz bands, while it operates in EDGE/GPRS mode in the 850, 900, 1800 and 1900 modes. These are the primary modes used by AT&T and T-Mobile. These modes are not compatible with CDMA phones such as those offered by Sprint or Nextel. Powered by a 1 GHz microprocessor, the I9000 can be equipped with up to 32 GB of memory, using standard microSD memory cards. The beauty of this type of memory is that it offers one a host of providers such as PNY or Kingston so one can order the memory needed at the best price possible. Honestly, it’s best to equip the I9000 with the maximum amount of memory possible because the more memory it has access to the faster it runs. Further, the memory issue becomes crucial as you open more apps and keep them open, while using the smartphone. For example, if you have a full calendar of events and have to keep the calendar displayed, it does take a bit of memory to ensure that it happens. However, let’s say that at some point you want to send and email. Just opening the email app and its editor require further memory and if you are operating, as one would expect in WiFi mode (802.11 b/g/n recognized), you begin to find that you are really pushing the envelope at 8 GB of memory, while 16 GB offers better performance. When you hit 32 GB, you are ready to play in the big leagues as you will be able to not only keep your calendar open, but also your email application, along with your WiFi application. One of the interesting features of the I9000 is that it can actually become part of your home or office network, if your router recognizes 802.11 b/g/n. If it does, your smartphone can become a networked device that will operate in peer-to-peer mode. In this way, you can not only keep your emails updated automatically, but you can download and read memos in real-time. And, if you are away from your cube for an extended period, but within the reach of your network, you can still respond to urgent emails or create and edit memos or small documents and route them to the proper recipients. Outside the office, the I9000 will, like other Samsung smartphones, locate mobile hotspots so that you can stay in touch with your office. At home, you will find the I9000 is much more than just a smartphone. It can operate as a very nice alarm clock by providing you with a tone or audio tone that you find will wake you up without nicely. Also, you’ll find that it offers Flash Lite 3.1 as its standard browser and it will also allow you to have several screens or applications open at one time so you can surf the net, read a news report or financial report or respond to a work memo. Once you are finished with work, you can use the camera for a wide variety of high-definition items including video, where its 1280 by 720 resolution and 30 frame per second mode let you view high-definition video in almost 3D mode. The I9000 offers a rich palette of colors and recognizes these video modes: DivX, Xvid, MPEG64 H.263/H.264, WMV, VC-1, 3gp (MP4) 3gp (divx), MKV, FLV H.263 Sorenson. On the audio side, the I9000 recognizes such high-definition sound modes as MP3, AAC, AAC+, OGG, WMA, AMR-NB, WAVE, MID, AG3, lMY, FLAC and XMF. You can access these modes through the I9000′s 3.5 mm audio jack. It also features Samsung’s Sound Alive system which delivers concert quality audio to your smartphone. As you can see, this phone, which not only recognizes the angle you are viewing it at, but also will operate in either 2G mode for 769 minutes or 391 minutes in 3G mode. In standby, the 1500 mah Li-pol offers up to 750 hours of standby time in 2G mode or 625 hours in 3G mode. At 4.82 by 2.53 by 0.39 inches and 4.16 ounces this aMOLED touch-screen device is easy to use as it allows you to pinch and open videos quickly, while allowing you fine videography with a 5MP autofocus camera that offers multiple modes such as a self-shot, action shot, an add me, where you can add an image of yourself to an already composed image. Two other modes are the cartoon shot, where you can make your image into a cartoon representation of yourself and a smile shot that will take multiple images of a person and takes the one if finds smiling. You will find this and more In the I9000, including its Smart Alarm feature, a Daily Briefing feature where you are presented with a daily briefing of information that you choose and indicate to your I9000 is important. All in all, the I9000 is quite a smartphone and shows why Samsung is a leader in its market.

There are a variety of different types of quality garment bags that you can choose from. Unfortunately, there are also a lot of cheap ones that will do nothing more than provide you with wrinkled or damaged clothes upon your arrival. The best way to ensure that your clothes will be protected is by buying a quality bag that you can take on any trip. However, carrying around a bunch of bags is not easy, and throwing an extra one around your neck can only make things more difficult. You can buy a rolling garment bag with most luggage sets or individually to match. Some are made out of canvas, others are leather. It just depends on which style suits your particular tastes. Crash Bandicoot 1 – The Original and Best
Crash Bandicoot 1 was the breakthrough platforming video game from Naughty Dog way back in 1996. The game was released on the PlayStation 1, and was one of the PlayStation’s first real great games. In addition to this, Crash Bandicoot 1 was the start of a brand which has now spawned 17 Crash Bandicoot games in total (although only about half have been on games consoles, as some have been released for mobile phones). Crash Bandicoot is a rather odd character for a video game, and you join him in his wacky quest to stop Dr. Neo Cortex from world domination. One of the highlights about the game is the light-hearted style, and the way the game doesn’t take itself too seriously. The graphics are also a blend between cartoon and realism, with a great, lively colour scheme. In the game you must work your way through the linear levels (often referred to as ‘tube’ levels, due to the shape of them). The game is a 3D platformer, where you must break as many crates as you can before reaching the end of the level to receive a special bonus. On each level in Crash Bandicoot 1 there are 2 bonus items to collect; a Gem and a Crystal. The gem in always found in a secret or hard-to-reach part of the level, that is found by thinking outside the box and dense exploration. The gem is obtained by breaking every single crate on a level. This is often much harder than it first sounds, as you cannot usually go backwards if you miss one. For fans of Crash Bandicoot 1, but who do not still have their old Playstation or indeed the game, you can now download it online on the PlayStation Network. Obviously there is a small charge of a few dollars, but you get to download the game directly onto your PS3′s hard-drive and play it as much as you want.

The Ill Effects of Wii Play Station Games and What to Do About It
|
It seems that up to ten people a week are being hospitalized with injuries caused by playing Nintendo Wii games, prompting doctors in Britain to issue warnings of the dangers associated with the Wii video game system. “There has been a 100 percent increase in patients complaining of Wii-itis,” says, Dr. Dev Mukerjee of Broomfield Hospital, Essex. “Most patients are admitted after playing tennis or running games which involve sudden movements, resulting in tendon stretching or tearing.” “It’s possible Wii-itis may lead to rheumatism or arthritis later in life. Patients often have inflammation of the shoulder or wrist,” said Dr. Mukerjee. Another common injury is the Wii-knee, blamed on the bending of the knee from using the Wii special platform and a series of movements ranging from yoga to strength-training moves. In extreme cases, the kneecap can be dislocated or pop out of joint. Doctors commonly treat Wii-knee with cortisone injections, icing, and anti-inflammatory painkillers. Treatments can last up to three months. In addition, it is extremely important to learn proper form when first taking up a new sport. Novice players will develop improper stroke patterns from long term use of the sports games, which can potentially effect their ability to excel in those specific activities later in life. Here are a few tips to prevent Wii-Injuries: First: Warm up and stretch before every session and don’t over exert yourself. Remember to stretch and allow your body to cool down after each exercise. Second: Work within your limits to get a good experience from the balance board and to prevent hurting yourself. Third: Give yourself time in between games. Play games 3 or 4 times a week instead of everyday, and make sure to pace yourself between games. Fourth: Consult your Doctor about beginning a routine that involves different exercises and stress on the joints (specifically knees, back and elbow). Ask what suggestions he/she has regarding this type of exercise. Fifth: The best for last. Don’t use it. get off your butt and go ride a bike, play tennis, or find an activity you enjoy Finally: Realize the Wii Play Station and balance board are physical games that require practice before fully exerting yourself. The Wii games are designed for fun and you must find the proper balance between the fun part and the exertion part. you will end up having a much better experience. The Nintendo game design team wasn’t content to just let us sit around and play video games on the couch. Instead they had to invent a gaming system that makes us actually get up off the couch and move around, thus exposing just how out of shape we’ve become as a society. Well guess what? Most people still sit on the couch and play the games because they are Realii lazy

Pikmin 2 reportedly finally coming to the US – SlashGear
The sequel to the iconic creature-wrangling game Pikmin will be making its way to US store shelves…seven years after it was originally released in Japan, according to media reports. Pikmin 2, originally released for the Gamecube, was remade for the Wii a few years ago but it still left American gamers in the dust. Now, Nintendo is finally opening up the door to allow the title to have the fan base it always should have had. The Ill Effects of Wii Play Station Games and What to Do About It
It seems that up to ten people a week are being hospitalized with injuries caused by playing Nintendo Wii games, prompting doctors in Britain to...
Pikmin 2 was heralded for its continuation and expansion of the addicting gameplay that made the original so unique and refreshing. The Japanese version received critical praise and strong sales, prompting Nintendo to translate it into English and launch it in Europe and Australia. But for reasons that are still unclear, it never came to American shores. When Nintendo updated the controls and re-released Pikmin and Pikmin 2 for the Wii, many expected it might finally be the time for North America to get the latter game. But alas, only the Wii version of Pikmin was released here even though other regions also got Pikmin 2. Apparently someone at Nintendo woke up and now, seven years after it launched on Gamecube and three years after it was re-released on Wii, Pikmin 2 will finally be hitting the US on the Wii. Reports suggest it will be available in June, meaning it could potentially be an E3 announcement.
